My son got his feelings hurt over snow pants

Yesterday our temperature dipped into the single digits so I pulled out the snow pants for my boys, since they do have to wait outside for the school bus. I could not believe it this morning when I was getting my youngest son ready for the bus and when I handed him his snow pant’s I saw his facial expression turn rather gloomy, so I asked him what was wrong??? Normally he is in a spectacular mood about riding the school bus and going to school in general.

His response to me was that he didn’t want to wear his snow pants to school again. I asked him why and he sadly told me because he got laughed at for wearing them to school and that it hurt his feelings. I’m like WTF, hello my son is in Kindergarten and since when did snow pants become unpopular for 5 and 6 year olds. I just reached out to him and gave him a hug, told him it’s okay and that the snow pants are to keep him warm while he waits for the bus in the cold and that sooner or later other kids at school would be wearing them too. Along with mentioning to him that he didn't want his Asthma to flare up due to the cold weather changes.

Then I turned around and asked him if he did not want to wear his snow pants to school again today or if he wanted to stay warm and go to school in his snow pants, needless to say my baby chose on his own to stay warm so he left in his snow pants.

I remember those days...We lived in Iowa when our son was in kindergarten. Just trying to fit in as kids is very tough, isn't it? Give your son a hug from me too. What a good mom you are. :)

webduck, aww thanks! I will give him your hug. I know upper grade level kids have their certain level of silly coolness but I tell you I never thought I would hear this one.

Yay, snow! I'm in the ATL and wish we could have a white Christmas. Here's hoping a miracle happens.

By the way, I enjoy reading your blog. It's nice to read blog entries that are well written, instead of 2-sentence blurbs of silly questions, just to get people to respond.

Stop by my blog at RaveRantRage.blogspot.com to read about what's on my mind lately.

Peace,
c james.

Awww! It's a bummer when kids can be mean at that young age! My daughter is also in Kindergarten - I know she would be really sad if kids teased her for any reason...so far she's been lucky! You handled that perfectly! :)

c james I know the snow can excite those living in less snowy places but grrr I can so do without it sometimes. The white Christmas and building snowmans is pretty cool but winter just lasts too long to me, lol. Tell you what send me that ATL weather and maybe I'll send you a snowball down there, lol!

Thanks so much for your nice compliments, do stop by again. I'll check your blog as well.

Stacy tell me about it, total shocker it was to me. My son loved wearing his snowsuit last winter during preschool and while playing outside, so I know he didn't like the laughter.

Hope your daughter continues to avoid the silly laughters that can go on at schools, thank you for the comment and for stopping by my blog.

it sucks that the teasing starts so early now. i know i'd want to the snow pants. i don't like snow or cold. and i know how the cold air can cause an asthma attack. i have asthma and it flares up now and again. good for your baby deciding to wear em :)

Ciara, I know teasing suck's big time. I can imagine many kid's tease without realizing they're hurting someone's feelings as a part of growing up. Yeah, my son know he hate's when his asthma flare's so he gladly will dress for the weather.

I feel for your son. Gimmem a hug. But to be teased for wearing snowpants at 5 years old is incomprehensible. Our school district requires elementary school children from K-5 to have snowpants for school!

Good Luck
Di

Di, yeah it was a downer moment for him and he still loves those snowpants, so the teasing effect didn't last long. Thanks for the hug for him. That's something new required up through 5th grade wow.
